Welcome to Chromium

Tuesday, September 02, 2008

Today, Google launched a new web browser called Google Chrome. At the same time, we are releasing all of the code as open source under a permissive BSD license. The open source project is called Chromium - after the metal used to make chrome.

Why did Google release the source code?

Primarily it's because one of the fundamental goals of the Chromium project is to help drive the web forward. Open source projects like Firefox and WebKit have led the way in defining the next generation of web technologies and standards, and we felt the best way we could help was to follow suit, and be as open as we could. To be clear, improving the web in this way also has some clear benefits for us as a company. With a richer set of APIs we can build more interesting apps allowing people to do more online. The more people do online, the more they can use our services. At any rate, we have worked on this project by ourselves for long enough - it's time for us to engage with the wider web community so that we can move on to the next set of challenges.

We believe that open source works not only because it allows people to join us and improve our products, but also (and more importantly) because it means other projects are able to use the code we've developed. Where we've developed innovative new technology, we hope that other projects can use it to make their products better, just as we've been able to adopt code from other open source projects to make our product better.

How will we be working with the open source community?

To begin with, we are engaging with the WebKit community to integrate our patches back into the main line of WebKit development. Because of Chromium's unique multi-process architecture, the integration of the V8 JavaScript engine, and other factors, we've built a fairly significant port of WebKit on Windows, and are developing the same for Mac OS X and Linux. We want to make sure that we can find a productive way to integrate and sync up with the WebKit community in this effort as we move forward.

Today, you can visit our project website at www.chromium.org, where you can get the latest source code or the freshest development build. If you're interested in keeping track of what's going on, you can join one of our discussion groups, where you can participate in development discussions and keep track of bugs as they're filed and fixed. Maybe you'll want to fix a few, too! You'll also find information on reporting bugs and all the various other aspects of the project. We hope you'll check it out!

This is the Chromium blog. The posts here will be of a mostly technical nature, discussing the design theory and implementation details of work we've done or are doing. Over the next few weeks there'll be a number of posts that give a high level tour of the most important aspects of the browser.

Finally, if you've not yet done so, take Google Chrome for a spin. You can download it from http://www.google.com/chrome/.

Nice first release. Chrome won't be my browser of choice, though, until it has a few features I'm used to from Firefox (e.g. live bookmarks, view selection source).

So far, I like the look and feel of Chrome. Obviously I know it's very, very early (as in just released), but might as well consider this feedback: For customization, I would like for Chrome to have a sort of a 'choose your own' favicon feature for bookmarks. Currently, sites that I have bookmarked, with favicons, I have deleted the names. So it's easy for me to click to that site by clicking on a favicon. If Chrome were to allow users to add or customize favicons for bookmarked websites (w/o favicons), that would be a neat feature. In fact, I could definitely use it as this moment as I'm importing my bookmarks.
But obviously, I think this "plug-in" feature will be available sometime in the future. Cross my fingers.

Really great browser, but I have to ask: will it enable add-ons like Mozilla Firefox?

This is what makes FF so great!

Fantastic, smooth & quick. Gmail loads almost instantly and web pages load quicker than any other browser I have used. And this browser has a built in spell checker just like FF3 does which is AWESOME! Now all we need are some nifty extensions and plug-ins so I can call this baby home. Props to Google on this one, I love you guys! :)

fn said...

@otacon, in the press conference they did mentioned that plug-ins are definitely in the works.

Interface is simple but missing the home button which is the traditional one!(kind of used to it). We need to get the third party plugins installed as there are cool tools like firebug for web developers!

C'mon guys, you have to be kidding me!
OK, I understand that starting with supporting one platform for beta testing is easier than maintaining a few packets from the start . And I can also understand that you choose Windows, because that will give you the most testers. (Although you should maybe not brag THAT loud about open source after this decision.)

But why don't you even allow me to download it under linux??? You may have heard of a program called "wine"? Or the possibility that somebody like me wants to download it on this PC and test on my "Toy-PC" I use for messing around (that's not online)?

I understand all the reasons for a "windows only" Alpha. But locking out linuxers deliberately is just stupid.

Joel said...

The browser doesn't work on two computers that I have tried it on. On lauch, opening new tabs or browsing to new content in an existing tab I get the following error:

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.

Willow said...

Really enjoying what I'm experiencing so far, but I can hardly wait for some of the add ons to catch up. (Although watching videos while surfing other sites has been a dream, so I'm glad that was fully supported before launch!)

I'm looking forward to watching this browser expand - nice to see someone not just going for the bog standard!

I really like this new browser.

I just found a small bug on the German Google Website (www.google.de)
If you click on "Werben mit Google" (Advertise on Google) in Chrome you get a 404 error. In Ie7 it works ;)

I think its just a serverside problem of google.de, but kind of funny^^

I really like the rest of the browser :)

Espacially the Javascript speed and the application link functionality is really great.

Windows 2000 has over twice the market share (1.93%) as Linux (0.93%) worldwide according to Net Applications. And another 1.04% are on Windows NT, 98, or 95.

You are working on a version for Linux. Why not also provide support for Windows 2000 which has over twice the market share?

I am guessing that in some regions and demographics, older operating systems versions are still in use at a greater percentage than the worldwide average.

My work computer from a very large software company in the Silicon Valley still has Windows 2000 on it! I would like to try and use Chrome but I can't!

When you try to enter a webpage that contains/contained malware, it doesn't let you until you try again and then you have the option to finally go in.
Somewhere along the way it says why you can't enter the webpage, and it gives you the trojans/malware and basically the past infected pages that are in that site.
Here comes my question: can you access that information without using your browser?

b) why in the hell can't i modify the default region of the search engine when i'm trying to search for something directly from the browser? if i'm in pakistan now, i don't want the pakinstan's google as my default search engine, so how can i modify it?

Carey said...

Claudiu: I think you’re looking for the Google Safe Browing API.

Where do we report bugs? It just won't run - keep getting the sad face. IE and Firefox both still work so it is not an internet connection or DNS issue.

@Carey

Well actually I now understand why I was misunderstood. When I said "without your browser" I meant without using the browser application, but instead using another webpage, a service like gmail/reader/etc.
I'm also on the user side, the option that you gave me it's on the developer side, but that isn't what I was looking.
Anyway, thank you for your reply.

okey you guys are already hear that chrome needs a "extension" support.

i want also seen in bookmarks that has "add page here" like, if you are a some site and you has lots of bookmark folders, then it is much easier to add new page some subfolder, if that folder has that option to adding active page/tab to the folder.

also i seen some leaks with flash and other media player plugins, flash leak memory and cpu on time to time.

This browser is as fast as lightning! I love the easy bookmarks transfer. But, I still use my Firefox because I have it set the way I like it, and because of all of the add-ons. It would be The-Frickin'-Balls' is you guys could develop an application that allows seemless transfers of add-ons directly to Chrome!

But, I have a Chrome icon on my taskbar. I have opened Chrome no less than 10 times already today for the speed!

It is very quick to do things that i used to do, i guess cause that's cause i usually use IE7 though!

Only things that are slightly annoying so far that I have found is that you can't click in the middle mouse button and scroll like that, and also the text selection seems to go outside of paragraphs... weird.

I would totally leave using IE if Chromium would add Siber's Roboform functionality to the brower. I also would like to see the Google Toolbar, and other popular toolbars added. I really enjoy how fast the browser opens pages. Thanks Google.

Pinak Ghosh said...

I am impressed with Google Chrome and the entire Chromium project.

Here's why I liked the browser:
1. I has a very simple yet attractive look.
2. It is not resource heavy. So even it runs well on a slower machine.
3. The looks compliment the best feature of the browser and that is its speed. Its very fast.
4. Also it offers maximum space available in the screen to view the website. That's pretty cool.

But there could be developments.

1. The progress bar should be incorporated at least somewhere. I think it would be best if Google can consider the Safari Browser from Apple in this aspect.
2. Google should also consider developing an email client much like Thunderbird or Outlook Express and provide more flexibility to Gmail users.
3. There should be more, simple yet meaningful plugins which however, must not slow the browser down.

All said, since this is only a beta version, I hope there will be various developments making it simpler, faster and even better to use.

All my hearty congratulations to Google for presenting this wonderful browser. I keep my finger crossed for one day I sincerely wish that there will be an Operating Platform from this amazing tech house.

DON'T BE CONNED BY THE TALK OF OPEN SOURCE

Looking into this further:

I have been duped by Google into believing Chrome was Open Source, IT ISN'T

Google Chrome is built with open source code from Chromium.

Chromium is the code Google have released to the open source community with the BSD license,

Chrome built from this code has been adapted for Google commercial objectives (obviously they're not a charity)

It comes with a pretty scary EULA (End User License Agreement)

How many people who installed it read this bit of the EULA

"By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any content which you submit, post or display on or through, the services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the services and may be revoked for certain services as defined in the additional terms of those services."

Worrying?

Chrome (and Chromium) are also based on out of date version of Webkit, this out of date version has already been patched by Apple for their Safari browser

Please read http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1843
for details of the CRITICAL flaw

I am a big fan of Chrome (see my previous posts), but until this critical flaw is fixed it's unsecure to use it

And I will be using the open source Chromium alternative so I don't have to grant Google a royalty free license to use any content I upload/create/display using their Chrome browser

Please think of a Zoom feature like the one in Firefox 3!
I browse the web on a TV set and most sites just take a bit of the screen (i.e. 800px over 1920) and I often want see better.
Firefox 3 has an excellent ZOOM feature while Chrome just increases the font size making most pages look ugly and the feature almost useless.
Think about it.

Love how fast this browser is. Have noticed a few quirks:
- ironically, using gmail within iGoogle is quirky, at best

- have noticed a few pages that have more ads (!) in Chrome than in Firefox. (Chrome adds a column for ads on the right of the page - have tried several times in both browsers with the same results)

- did I mention it's freaking FAST?

- I won't repeat all the clamoring for extensions a la Firefox - but um, yea.

- what's up with Java?

- Overall, really REALLY nice first shot. Looking forward to future releases.

I want to be able to access my bookmarks from any browser on any computer (Mac or PC) without having to jump through hoops to sync them manually or go to a webpage. I'm sticking with Firefox for now because I can use Google Toolbar to access my bookmarks, but hope support is added to Chrome soon. That's my tipping point.

This is a missed opportunity. Please add Google Bookmarks integration soon!

hi Chromium team!

I know gChrome is prepared for gChrome plugins, but when will we know we can start building our own?

also, any plans of integrating RSS feeds in History view or anywhere such as sidebar or in toolbar?

More power and continue doing a great excellent job!

I want to launch chrome from google web page instead of using it on my computer just like google doc etc.

If that is not possible, is it a portable application which I can take on my USB pen drive?

Thanks

I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with Google Chrome. It crashes *ALL THE TIME*, no matter what I do. It crashes if I try to import bookmarks, it crashes when I merely try to open the "Options" menu, it freezes when I visit sites with broken HTML (the same sites that make Safari freeze)... this would be the first bad Google product.
I'm aware of the beta stadium, but this is really far too unstable to be of any use.

BTW, this is on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, installed under a user account (I'm a bit worried that this even worked? The installer left me no choice to switch to the admin account...). Not your everyday OS installation, so, maybe that's the reason.

I must admit it's very fast though. At least the speed is promising.

Hey guys,

At home I run Winxp, and at work I sit behind a proxy with user authentification.

Please, provide a full installer at least.

Thanks Yuriy

I agree with GIO and Peter Gfader: a text only or text+graphics option will be most welcome, And please add a shortcut for each (like Ctrl++ and Ctrl+Alt++)

while I agree that this is the best browser so far. I also agree that there needs to be a zoom feature like FF3...or IE. I too browse on a large screen tv and zooming just text doesn't cut it...a lot of sites have text that is embedded in a graphic and still can't read

love the browser but miss the G search feature in the toolbar and the basic menu bar of firefox. i also don't like the auto-fill/past visited feature on the address bar.

@RichB
IE8 runs different tabs in different threads, not processes so it is nowhere near as crash resistant as chrome. Also it messes up when it comes to plugins.

Also waiting for the Linux version (though firefox is still an amazing browser I would seriously consider switching just for the stability)

RichB said...

@tom wright

Read the lcie entry on the IE blog. It explicitly states tabs can go in separate processes.

@RichB
oops, guess I can't trust everything I read on the net. Still, in terms of performance Firefox and chrome (and epiphany, safari, opera and all of the other browsers I can think of) beat IE hands down.

Chrome needs to improve support for windows media player to allow users to use online tv sites like channel4.com

Google Chrome is nice and "tidy". Much in the same way that tricycles feel tidy compared to a 10-speed. There's not enough here to recommend this browser over any of it's competitors except IE. Chrome lacks of a "Home" button on the bar by default, has no bookmarks link by default, has no support for plugins, and lacks the ability to do full screen display like Firefox can. Furthermore, the icon for Chromium looks more professional and less "Fischer Price" than Chrome's.

It's one great saving grace, in my opinion, is the ability to define multiple pages to open on start up. Hopefully this facet of Chrome wills soon work its way into Firefox as a default option.

I would have expected more in a "finished" product from a company like Google with it's resources and talent.

b_i_d said...

@Leroy: Firefox had the option for multiple start-pages since the first version. Just put a few URLs in the start-page field and put a ; between them.

There used to be a voting system for Chrome feature requests- I thought it was hosted by Google.

Does anyone know where this is?
