Careful! Extensions Can Bite!

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

Since we began work on an extensions system for Chromium, we've received a lot of positive feedback. While the system is not yet complete, we've noticed that a lot of you have started creating and installing extensions for daily use. This is really encouraging, and it motivates us to quickly finish things up, to enable extensions by default on all Google Chrome releases.

If you're using extensions now, you should keep in mind that they are powerful software. Extensions integrate with your browser, so they can access and change everything that happens in it. For example, the same technology that enables an extension to periodically check the number of messages in your Gmail inbox could also be used to read all your personal mail and tweet it to your mom! This can happen because of malicious intent or simply because of a bug.

To help protect your experience when using extensions, we recently enabled auto-update for extensions on the dev channel release. Like Chrome's auto-update mechanism, extensions will be updated using the Omaha protocol, giving developers the ability to push out bug fixes and new features rapidly to users of their extensions. This is an important step towards a v1 release of extensions for all users, so we're pretty excited.

In addition, when we turn the extension system on, we plan to offer a gallery with ratings and comments that you can use to judge whether you want to install a particular extension. We will also have processes in place that, combined with reports from users, should help limit the number of malicious extensions that get uploaded and distributed to users. These processes will include removal of extensions that we have reason to believe are malicious. Until these things are in place and the extension system is officially launched, we recommend that you only install extensions that you built yourself.

Chrome is such an amazing browser. The ONLY thing keeping me on firefox is extensions. Chrome beats it in every other way.

I know this is off-topic but I've looked extensively for the right way to communicate with the Chrome developers. Are you aware of the CERT alert regarding Flash? http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/259425 "Adobe Flash contains a vulnerability that may allow a remote, unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system. Adobe Flash Player, Reader, Acrobat, and other products that include Flash support are affected."

It appears that there is no way to disable Flash using Chrome. Or is there? If there is, you may want to announce this somewhere?

That's all and thank you for all you do. Love my Chrome.

Will the extension system ever finish.. I havn't seen any extensions just close at actually being usefull or matching those of firefox.. The fact that there still is no date set for when extension system is hoped to be ready worries me...

I can certainly live without useless "eye candies" (that so many add-ons amount to), but - Norton Toolbar, please...

It's impossible to live with "no eye-candies" without an ad blocker. My eyes are flashing with the flash ads.

I can't wait to use Chrome full time. Every few days I'll use it for a bit, just to see how it has progressed. The day Adblock is ported as a Chrome extension is the day I permanently use Chrome as my default browser. :)

Until then, I stick with firefox. Adblock is the one and only thing holding me back.

I love Google Chrome, but I would love it even more, if it had an add blocker like firefox extension, addblock

I'd like to see an extension that can be enabled and disabled with daily preference that can store to memory more than only one clipboard item. I can't stand forgetting to paste my item before copying another to only lose it. Sometimes I just have so many tasks going on at once that I forget, but having something like this that can be turned on or off to save or more importantly use memory at will.

No ad blocking = no use.

Hi,
I like the extensions because they provide some extra functionality to the browser.Yes some externsion also harm the browser performance but it is upto the user what he want.

I'll echo what others have said - using a browser that doesn't block ads is irritating to me and I'll keep going back to Firefox. I understand this might undermine Google's advertising revenue strategy, but its what the people want!

Adblock: simply change your hosts file. It's easy and will then work for all browsers you might use. Details at http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm and http://abelhadigital.com/.
