The Chrome Web Store
Wednesday, May 19, 2010
We believe it should be easier for users to discover web apps and for developers to reach a large audience. That’s why today at Google I/O, we announced the Chrome Web Store, an open marketplace for web apps.
Google Chrome users who find web apps in the store will be able to create convenient shortcuts in Chrome for easy access. Also, developers will have the option to easily sell their apps through the store using a convenient and secure payment system.
To give you a preview of what it means to prepare a web app for the store, we've published some preliminary documentation. We look forward to your feedback and sharing our progress with you openly as many of the technical details will likely change before we launch. To stay up-to-date, subscribe to our developer group and look for news on the Chromium blog.
The Chrome Web Store will be available to users later this year. We plan to share more technical details soon. In the meantime, visit chrome.google.com/webstore for more information.

Nice, but "Store"? Store implies somewhere you go to purchase something, but I assume these will all be free apps like you make with Mozilla Prism or Chrome's similar built-in feature.

This move is probably indicates a move towards the Chromium OS more and probably a tablet with that.

Yeah @Dewan I just looked at this more closely, I did see bug reports about Apps but I had assumed it was a Chrome OS thing and not for the browser itself. Cool.

@The MAZZTer: Did you not read the post, it clearly states this is an actual store where devs can sale apps
developers will have the option to easily sell their apps through the store using a convenient and secure payment system.
I'm not sure I like the selling idea either but many devs are starting to ask for money/contributions to aid in app maintenance and development.

I just emailed this to Steve Jobs and he replied with
"Web OS is shit. It killed Palm faster and more viciously than we did.
Sent from my iPad."

Is it just me, or does --enable-apps not actually do anything? I get an error that apps are not enabled when I try to load a quick test one I made on 6.0.401.1 on Windows.

Wait, what does buying a webapp mean? Paying to use a website?
And how are "shortcuts to webapps" different from bookmarks?
Also, where does this put Android market place?

@Prashant All it is basically are webpages that can integrate with the desktop. Similar to Adobe AIR or Mozilla Prism if you are familiar with them. Chrome already had Prism-like functionality but Web Apps seem targeted as a more central Chrome feature.

We have a website called http://alternativeto.net that has a pretty nice library of online apps.
Check it out. Hope you guys will release some kind of API so that we can get data from the store and provide links to buy apps and so on.

Been trying to test this thing, but the --enable-apps is not working on my dev copy of chrome 6.0.401.1 I get an error that apps are not enabled. This happens with the "test" ones they made or any other I "test". Anyone has run into the same problem? This is on Chrome for Windows v.6.0.401.1

I will be watching this closely. Be paid developing apps on the web would be my thing. And damn, bring G to the "Tablet III Arena" match-up and I'll enjoy much of it.

"developers will have the option to easily sell their apps through the store using a convenient and secure payment system."
Selling paid apps on the Android Market is currently limited to developers in a handful of countries. I understand that this has been the situation for more than a year now and so far Google has provided no indication of when it will be opened up to others.
Will the Chrome Web Store also be limited to these chosen few countries, or will developers in other countries be able to sell apps there?

Its too bad that Google has chosen to be a copy cat and follower in the tech industry rather than a true innovator. Just look at there financials and everything they have done outside search is a flop. Now even in search and paid advertising they are losing ground to Microsoft and Yahoo.
Unfocused and unimaginative.

Where are the info about how much of the revenues the developers will get when developing and selling in the store?
I love Google, but ready, theyr products have SHITY help pages and info.
You should learn something with Apple who really know what developers want to know and instantly deliver the info on the keynotes.
Looks like if you wanna be a part of this new Google world you´ll have to pay for a fortune teller to tell you whats gonna be like.

One thing that I must ask is if Google has plans for a way of extensively testing apps to ensure they will cause no harm to the user’s computer. I feel that a lot of people (including myself) will not download apps unless they are completely confident nothing will damage their computer. The multiple warning massages telling of the dangers of downloading things from the internet might scare people away. When people download Iphone apps they don’t go through the process of thinking “Do I completely trust the publisher, Will it harm my device, is it worth the risk?”. I think this chrome web store would be great only if people could browse and download web apps as carefree and confident as people download apps from the Iphone app store.
Still I think it is a excellent idea though!! : )

As I heard in the keynote that through chrome web store google is trying to promote an alternative for the developers to earn money , by selling their apps. For developer it'll be a great platform to reach millions of users. But I do agree with Dewan & Mazzter ,that, besides this monetization plan, this is actually a step forward towards the Chrome Os.
