Danger: Mac and Linux builds available
Thursday, June 04, 2009
In order to get more feedback from developers, we have early developer channel versions of Google Chrome for Mac OS X and Linux, but whatever you do, please DON'T DOWNLOAD THEM! Unless of course you are a developer or take great pleasure in incomplete, unpredictable, and potentially crashing software.
How incomplete? So incomplete that, among other things , you won't yet be able to view YouTube videos, change your privacy settings, set your default search provider, or even print.
Meanwhile, we'll get back to trying to get Google Chrome on these platforms stable enough for a beta release as soon as possible!

I was awaiting to give this a try, but as for my primary web browser I'm using Epiphany/Webkit which is also claimed to be unstable but it works like a charm.
So, essentially Epiphany/Webkit is ideal since Chrome also uses Webkit as its rendering engine. The only reason for me to download this is for its V8 JavaScript engine :)

Wow!! - it works (with a bit of fiddling) with the latest Gentoo 64bit distribution. And it currently seems much faster than Firefox and appears stable. I've been able to access my gmail account and run most of the javascript at chromeexperiments.com. In fact, I'm writing this comment with the 64bit deb release! Thanks very much for releasing this!

I've been using the PPA Chromium package for a month or 2 now and the improvements have been great. It's about time Google pulled the Chromium improvements into Chrome, even if it's alpha. Great job!

From the Linux privacy page: "Google Chrome for Linux does not currently provide any visual indication to distinguish incognito mode windows from normal windows."
Not true. The tab bar is dark blue and the "You've gone incognito." message is displayed.
Otherwise, great work guys. I've been using the chromium-daily PPA since it came out, and it's been progressing very nicely. For the past two weeks or so I've been using Chromium exclusively, except for switching to Firefox for the occasional Flash. I'll keep using Chromium though, because it has my history and bookmarks, which Chrome does not have.
I love watching development of this great browser, especially through the svn log and #chromium. Thanks for your awesome work.

Spot on! I've been using the daily builds for some time now. I've really enjoyed seeing the steady progression of the browser in Linux over time. Every night I'm like a kid at Christmas, furiously apt-getting the next daily build, testing it, sifting through the menu options to see how it's coming along.
Very impressed so far. I was converted immediately to Chrome on Windows, and as soon as it's a bit more complete, it will be my default browser in Ubuntu. Thanks so much for the porting effort!

Love the use of 'Dev' to avoid the releasy connotations of 'Alpha' :)
Once plugin support is finished I'll be able to switch over, and once it can stand on its own without the system titlebar and borders I'll enjoy using it :)

It is possible to install Chrome directly through aptitude, without having to manually download the package. As an added advantage, any additional required dependencies (in my case, xdg-utils) will be pulled in automatically. Directions to do so are available.
Chrome is working wonderfully so far. I've been waiting patiently for this day for the last nine months. I think this might be what finally makes my life worthwhile.

there will probably never be a ppc port, since the best part of chrome (the javascript engine) is built for the intel instruction set, not the PPC instruction set. porting the javascript engine is a huge undertaking and it pains me to say it as the proud owner of a 12" g4 powerbook, but it's not gonna happen.
If you're on PPC and hope for a faster WebKit experience, Safari 4 Beta has some javascript engine improvements.

Wikipedia says:
Chromium is the open source project behind Google Chrome.[2] The Google-authored portion of it is released under the BSD license[clarification needed], with other parts being subject to a variety of different permissive open-source licenses, including the MIT License, the LGPL, the Ms-PL and a MPL/GPL/LGPL tri-license.[3]

What can I say? Not much, since my main Mac machine has a G4 PPC processor, so I can't even begin to try anything, alpha beta or otherwise.
I cannot believe a PPC porting can't be done. It may be a huge undertaking, but undertakings can be funded and Google is not exactly what I'd call a bankrupt company.
It's unbelievable I can use Google Chrome on a shitty Pentium III laptop manufactured 9 years ago but not on a Mac which is not even 4 years old and much more capable than said PC.
I get that it's an architecture-related problem, but cutting off what I believe is still a large audience (the PPC Mac owners, especially those who have still quite capable PowerMac G5s) doesn't look a smart move to me.
Oh well, thankfully there's life outside Google. I'll stick with Mesa Dynamics' Stainless (http://stainlessapp.com).
Regards,
Rick

What is the exact license of Chrome ?
In order to download the .deb, we must accept the "Google Chrome Terms of Service" that states:
"Unless you have been specifically permitted to do so in a separate agreement with Google, you agree that you will not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, trade or resell the Services for any purpose."
It is said later that the software is part of the service (referred as "content").
Is this really free software ? Do we have a "separate agreement with Google" ?

I agree that leaving us non-macintel users behind is rather foolish. There are huge numbers of us with perfectly functioning PPC Macs that do the job just fine for us that would love to be able to try {and someday use daily} Chrome , but won't be able to without a universal binary. And leaving out Tiger users too? Come on Google!

V8 only has stable code generators for ARM and 32-bit x86 at the moment.
This means:
(1) The 64-bit Linux package contains a 32-bit binary and depends on 32-bit system libraries.
(2) Contrary to the beliefs expressed in some of the complaints, a universal/fat binary containing a PCC version isn't simply a recompile. Code generators are notoriously difficult to debug, so I doubt it makes economic sense for Google to write and debug a PCC code generator.
If there really are tons of PPC disappointed users out there, perhaps one or a few will pony up and write a PPC backend for V8. It is, after all, an open-source project.
Or, you could try stubbing out V8 to not actually do anything and see how well it runs on PPC with JavaScript just not working. You have the source code.
Also, there are APIs exposed in Leopard that aren't available in Tiger. I imagine if the build doesn't support Tiger, this is the reason, rather than mere oversight.

Looking forward to an RPM that installs and runs on 64-bit Fedora 11 (sans 32-bit libraries). :)
(Not a complaint, just registering the fact that not all of us Linux nerds are Debian/Ubuntu users, and if we've gone 64-bit, some of us have gone 64-bit, and aren't doing some sort of "64-bit except for..." concoction. :)

Firefox, Safari, Camino and many other browsers still support PowerPC and Chrome is so lightweight it would be perfect for many older machines.

I am really hoping that the Linux build has a public Beta release soon... it seems a little strange not to have one, especially given the Chrome OS announcement. Wouldn't it make sense to have the centerpiece of the new OS to have as much Linux user testing as possible?
I also hope that Google puts some effort into improving Flash on Chrome OS/Linux, possibly even to the extent of offering an alternative. Adobe's solution on Linux really sucks, consuming resources to the extent that it affects overall system performance. I'd be concerned that a Chrome OS netbook with limited processor performance might get bogged down when used to watch YouTube videos. Or perhaps Google's solution would be to use a different, more Linux-friendly video format for YouTube...
August 7, 2009 1:58 AM
Sharkbaitbobby said...
Felix, I agree with you, Flash on Linux sucks. Though I think that we all know what that "different, more Linux-friendly video format" is: HTML5 video, which is at least partially working in the latest Chromium. With the new HTML5 features (especially video) and the increased popularity of slower processors (netbooks/Chrome OS), Adobe _has_ to be feeling pressured to improve Flash performance, especially on Linux. Additional pressure (or even help!) from Google can only help.
And a beta of Google Chrome Linux can only be coming soon; it's almost at feature parity with the Windows version. I imagine the beta will come when Flash and other plugins are working by default and as stable as Firefox. After that it seems to only be printing, language settings, Gears, and some other, minor things.

My unfortunately my oracle database datafile is so big that I could not use strings keyword for searching.
I used,
strings datafilename_loc.
It failed with big file size. What I will do now?
How I can open file with strings?
2) It is about security.
While enhancing security of my temporary folder in the post described in http://www.sysadmin.md/secure-temporary-folders-on-existing-unix-or-linux-systems.html my redirection fails. This commands always fails
echo "/mnt/tmp /tmp ext3 loop,noexec,nosuid,rw 0 0" >> /etc/fstab

Running Chrome 3.0.197.11 on 64-bit Ubuntu Jaunty with 2.6.28-15 kernel :
I'm very much impressed by the improvements that have been made in Chrome for Linux over the past couple of months. Aside from the problem with SCIM, which I've mentioned earlier, I've noticed a couple of others, as follows :
1) Inability to send attachments with file paths in which non-ASCII glyphs are found. I've filed a bug (18754) on this matter, which may well be related to the SCIM problem mentioned above. The developers are aware of it and working on it.
2) With regard to the problems being worked on, the Chrome splash page states the following :
Plugins (e.g. Flash) are partway implemented and will cause frequent crashes. Use --enable-plugins to turn them on if you're ok with that; the browser is otherwise quite stable
...
I tried entering «--enable-plugins» in a terminal, but was informed that such a command does not exist. A bit confusing !...
Many thanks to the Chrome developers for their efforts hitherto - keep up the good work !...

I need a PPC solution for my clients -- a light flingable browser that can cruise through the unnecessary Flash bloat of YouTube etc (do I need to see HD dog trix? no)
If Google could create a browser (and/or OS) for these old machines, they would dominate the market of low-end/lo-fi user.
Many people just need email, basic internet, basic video.... but as Flash bloats up, all these otherwise good computers (and niche market) can't keep up.
But if people were able to flock to "the Google experience" because it was the only thing that worked on their machine -- talk about $$$!!
Everybody wins!

Chrome for Mac is looking quite good now! My biggest wish items are: let me edit my bookmarks (at least delete bookmarks I don't want any more or remove the entire list of bookmarks and reimport from Safari as I did initially); allow for updating the software (selecting About Google Chrome and pushing the update now button always gives me a server error).
Other issues are pretty minor (copying rows of text tend to give lots of blank in between rows when you paste them elsewhere, for example). Still not ready to make it my default browser, but I'm using it regularly!
PS - how about listing the most recent comments first rather than the oldest ones? Also a mention of what the latest version number and date release is would be nice. :-)

Massive disappointment that it can't run on older OS/systems. The Windows version is very retro compatible, so would be great to see this one keep up.

Hi, so I have seen all these ads for Google Chrome for Mac and I was like, oh what the heck, let's give it a whirl!
welllllll
i like it, give it a 3.5 out of 5
but none of the Java stuff works,
for instance, chatrooms that use java, don't work
games that use java, don't work, i know this is the beta, and i like the skins, pencil sketch, a few suggestions:
1. Allow an activities window, like Safari, so you can see what all is going on in a webpage
2. Allow personal prefaces like font and size i.e. i can set font and size to Tahoma 14 on Safari
3. Fix java lol, i know you will :)
4. I don't know, can't find it if it is, but allow users of Chrome to make their own "skins" it would be wicked cool!!! :D
Great job guys!!!!!!

I just wanna thank the team behind this BB (blazing browser)
I think you've done an outstanding job leading up to the beta release.
Looking forward to see where you guyz will take it from here, though I'm pretty sure it'll be a great ride for us "passengers"
