Extensions Status: On the Runway, Getting Ready for Take-Off

Wednesday, September 09, 2009

Good news for extension developers: as of today, extensions are turned on by default on Google Chrome's dev channel.

Extensions are small pieces of software that developers can write to customize the way Google Chrome works. We've been working on enabling extensions for a while, but until now, they were hidden behind a developer flag. As of today, this is no longer true. If you're on the dev channel, you can try installing some of our sample extensions.

Removing the flag is the first step in our launch process, and it means we're ready for a few more people to start using extensions-- the kind of adventurous people who populate the dev channel. For this release, we focused on getting most of the basic infrastructure and security pieces in place, in particular our new permission system. However, you should still be cautious and only install extensions from developers you trust.

Going forward, we are working hard towards a release on the Beta Channel. The UI is likely to change as we bring it up to Google Chrome's high standard, and we're still finishing up a few APIs. We've also enlisted some help to get extensions up to speed on Mac and Linux.

From the beginning, we've strived to make extensions super easy to develop. If you'd like to give it a try, you'll find everything you need to get started in our brand new documentation. If you've already written an extension, make sure to read this post about some recent changes.

When will adblock plus come to chromium? Is porting it something you are undertaking? Or is it your expectation that someone in the community will port it?

Couldn't find tabs.select or tabs.focus methods.

I'm looking to write an extension to change the order Ctrl+Tab cycles tabs in, and I guess I'd need one or the other.

Or is tabs.update(selected) sufficient?

Aaron Boodman said...

@Mikel Ward: That is a good idea for an extension, and yes, tab.update(selected) will update the focused tab.

@deepak: There are already several attempts at ad blockers available for the Chrome extension system.

Do a web search.

You said you are pushing for a beta release. Is the extension system slated for a milestone 3 release or milestone 4?

Aaron Boodman said...

@Meok: Extensions are mstone-4.

For those looking for adblock for chrome: adsweep (adsweep.org) works well with chrome.

Can I interpret this to mean that the «--enable-plugins» command-line flag is now superfluous and can be removed from Chromium and Google Chrome (dev channel) ?...

The sample extension "Subscribe in Feed Reader" doesn't work on my system. Using build 25615 with and without --enable-plugins and --enable-extensions options.

@lumpy pea coat: Great username.

Are you using linux or mac? Is so, page actions don't work on those platforms yet.

Otherwise, if you come to chromium-extensions@googlegroups.com with some information like any errors you are seeing, we'll try and debug it.

Is there any ballpark ETA for extensions on OS-X... what month or quarter?

Thanks,

It would be nice as well to have an estimate for when these page-action features will be extended (pardon the pun !) to Chrome/Chromium for Linux !...

I think Chrome must :
- readable RSS like Mathon(it very good)
- option search engines easier
- and managable history conveniently

(pay attention)

Uh oh! This isn't going to go very well! There's no community structure for these extensions, they will be housed on developers websites and not able to be found a single place :(

Google: You must make a community for Chrome developers, even though it's just starting.. I hope you've already thought about this.

Meok said...

Relax, Jason. They'll be an official extension gallery, much like the current Themes Gallery. it;s just that it;s too early in the process to build it. Like the themes, you'll probably get the first incarnation of the Extensions Gallery when Chrome 4.0 hit the beta channel.

You know what I need?
An --enable-extensions flag for the stable branch!

I WANT EXTENSIONS, NOT THEMES, FOR CHROME DAMMIT!!! (I _REALLY_ want my lastpass addon (and more) for Google Chrome )

sad user is sad :(

(you guys should make chrome 3.1 with the --enable-extensions flag enabled, just saying...)

Meok said...

@ NostraDavid
If you want extensions at any cost then why don't you just use the Dev Channel?

Hi,

I'm having a problem with installing extensions with the latest Chromium build, and some of the recent previous builds. I download the extension, but nothing happens and Chromium doesn't install anything. I've tried with the --enable-extensions flag and without it. Can anyone tell me how to install extensions?

Thanks,
Ice

Why Gogle Chrome or Chromium doesn't support SSL 3.0 like Chromium for Linux!? Or, like all the other browsers!?

4.0 has promising speed. Scrapbook is on the level of "hot water", essential. It should be present standardly integrated into the UI, complete with indexing, sorting, filtering, or even more esoteric features as mapping. These things should really be present on the level of system(i.e linux/vista/etc) and only be imported into a browser, to be shared with. "Zeitgeist" might be onto something.

«Removing the flag is the first step in our launch process ...»

Thanks for this development ; with some 300 extensions now available, the browser seems to be ready for prime time !...

But this leads to a query : should the above quote be interpreted to mean that the «--enable-extensions» flag that many of us have added to the Chrome/Chromium command line should now be removed ?...

Aaron, could you or someone else att Google take responsibility for removing the spam messages which have infected the comments to this blog of late ? Or should we just assume that the blog has passed its «use by» date and stop following it ?...
